Spastic Colon Bladder Syndrome

Spastic colon syndrome, or irritable bowel syndrome, affects the large intestine causing abdominal cramps and other symptoms. Spastic bladder syndrome, also known as painful bladder syndrome or interstitial cystitits, occurs when smooth muscle of the bladder contracts spastically, causing pressure and urgency to urinate.

  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of spastic colon include bloating, abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea and constipation. Symptoms of spastic bladder include frequent urination and an urgent need to urinate followed by leaking or urination.

    Causes

    • Spastic colon's cause is unknown but can be triggered by food, such as chocolate, stress, hormones, infectious diarrhea and other illnesses. Spastic bladder's causes include nerve damage, bladder or prostate cancer, and neurological diseases.

    Diagnosis

    • Spastic colon and bladder are diagnosed by a physical exam. Spastic bladder is also diagnosed through urine tests to check for blood, excess protein and bacteria.

    Treatment

    • Spastic colon treatment includes eliminated gas causing foods, and medicines, such as Metamucil and Prozac for symptoms. Spastic bladder treatment includes medicines, electrical pulses or surgery to control bladder muscles.

    Alternatives

    • Alternative treatment of spastic colon includes acupuncture, yoga and herbs such as peppermint. Alternative treatment of spastic bladder includes eating more fruits and vegetables, using herbs such as marshmallow root, and increasing vitamin intake.
