What Is Nebulizer Therapy?

A nebulizer (breathing machine) is used to administer inhaled medication. The machine uses pressurized room air to create a mist which delivers medicated air to the lungs for treating lung diseases such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

  1. Quick-Relief Medications

    • Nebulizer therapy quick-relief medications are used for immediate treatment of an asthma attack or lung disease symptoms.

    Long-Term Control Medications

    • Daily nebulizer therapy medications that are used to maintain control of asthma and lung disease symptoms are called long-term control medications.

    Nebulizer Therapy Procedure

    • Connect the air compressor and tubing. Then place the medication in the nebulizer cup and connect the face mask to the cup. Finally, turn on the compressor to begin the therapy treatment.

    Warning

    • Because nebulizer therapy is used to treat many types of lung conditions, the proper drug regimen is designed for each patient's individual needs and should not be altered without the approval of a physician.

    Nebulizer Care

    • It is very important to properly clean and disinfect nebulizer equipment after each nebulizer therapy treatment. Parts should not be put in the dishwasher and the air compressor tubing should not be cleaned, due to the potential to cause damage.
