Function
-
Contact dermatitis occurs when you come into contact with an allergen such as a soap ingredient or a chemical. The effects of allergens vary from person to person.
Types
-
Other allergens can be found in dust, plants, metals, rubber, jewelry, makeup and creams. Some people are allergic to neomycin, which is found in antibiotic ointments like Neosporin.
-
Atopic Dermatitis
-
Atopic dermatitis is common in people who have other allergies such as hay fever. It is usually worse for children, but its severity varies from person to person. The most common symptom is dry skin.
Misconceptions
-
Some skin irritants, such as soap, can also cause dermatitis, but it will take a lot of contact with soap over time to cause a reaction. Minimal contact with an allergen can cause a rash to appear.
Considerations
-
In most cases, contact dermatitis is completely harmless and will resolve on its own or with the use of a topical cortisone cream.
