Chiropractors and physical therapists are two disciplines used to treat back, nerve and muscle problems. Chiropractors are doctors, and physical therapists hold advanced degrees.

Chiropractor

According to the website Pain Channel, chiropractors stress an overall health plan without surgeries or medicines. These doctors focus on diet, rest, routine exercise and spinal adjustments. They utilize physical therapy, massage and water therapy in treating patients.

Education - Chiropractor

Chiropractors complete two to four years of undergraduate study, and four years of chiropractic study. While in chiropractic school, the first two years are classroom and lab study, while the last two years are clinical training on the back, muscle and nerves.

Physical Therapist

The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes physical therapists as those who work with patients who have injuries and diseases by providing therapies that restore function, relieve pain and improve mobility. They promote overall health and fitness and treat patients with exercise, cold and hot compresses, electrical stimulation and traction.

Education - Physical Therapist

Physical therapists complete a four-year undergraduate physical therapy program, and a two-year masters program. After this is completed, a three-year doctoral program is available.

Collaboration

Chiropractors and physical therapists hold many of the same ideas and principles. Chiropractors consult physical therapists for their patients, and some of them have therapists in their private practices.
