What Is Mobic Prescribed For?
Mobic is the brand name of the prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication meloxicam. Doctors prescribe Mobic for the relief of symptoms from a variety of arthritic conditions.
-
Function
-
Mobic works by inhibiting the production of hormones known as prostaglandins. Doctors do not fully understand why, but this results in a decrease in inflammation and pain associated with arthritic diseases that affect your joints, reports RxList.
Types of Arthritis
-
Doctors prescribe Mobic for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in children ages 2 and older, according to RxList.
-
Time Frame
-
Mobic does not cure arthritis and only works to alleviate symptoms caused by the disease, explains the Mayo Clinic. Because of this, it is likely that you will need Mobic to control your pain and inflammation for the rest of your life.
Risks
-
Risks associated with the use of Mobic include the formation of ulcers in your digestive system and an increased risk of heart disease, warns RxList. You are more likely to develop these conditions from prolonged or long-term use of Mobic, such as taking the drug for several months or years.
Considerations
-
Because its effects upon fetal development are unknown, doctors rarely prescribe Mobic for the treatment of arthritis in pregnant women. If you have a history of alcohol abuse, bleeding problems, stomach ulcers, tobacco use, anemia, asthma, congestive heart failure, edema, heart attack, hypertension, kidney or liver disease, stomach ulcers, stroke, aspirin-sensitive asthma or recent heart bypass surgery, it may not be safe for you to take Mobic, warns the Mayo Clinic.
