An electronic engineer is a skilled professional who designs, builds and/or troubleshoots electrical equipment. These individuals possess an in-depth knowledge of various electronic components as well as the ability to read and understand blueprints.
Mathematical and Science Skills
Candidates who wish to pursue careers in electronics engineering must possess a keen interest in math and science. These skills can be honed by taking courses throughout secondary school.
To become an electronics engineer, a candidate must possess a four-year degree from an accredited academic institution. Depending on the level of the role, some employers may require that candidates possess master's degrees within the electrical engineering major.
Professional certification may be obtained through the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world's largest professional association catering to those in this industry.
Employers typically prefer to hire candidates who possess practical experience within the field. Entry level candidates may obtain this experience by participating in formal internship programs while enrolled in school.
If the employer is the United States government or a contractor thereof, candidates may be required to obtain a security clearance in order to participate in a project. This clearance is authorized after a candidate successfully passes a thorough background screening.
