History
-
Bump keys were originally used by locksmiths to quickly and effectively open a lock. The bump key does not do damage to the lock. Until 2005 they were an unknown resource for picking locks. However, in 2005 a Dutch TV show showed what they were and how to use them.
Function
-
The bump key is used to crack pin tumbler locks. The key fits particular types of locks. It is filed down so that when it is hit, it triggers the pins in the tumbler.
-
Types
-
Bump keys can be any key that fits a lock. Any pin tumbler lock can be opened using a bump key. However, if there is a patent on the key, making a copy through traditional means will be much more difficult.
Considerations
-
Key bumping is extremely noisy and loud. Although it is effective, the noise is loud enough to be heard if you were in your home and a bump key was used on your door.
Prevention/Solution
-
High grade security locks make key bumping almost impossible. Electronic, magnetic and rotating disc locks can not be manipulated at all.
