Hip Subluxation in CP Children

Hip subluxation (dislocation of hips) is associated with cerebral palsy (CP), a neurological disorder that effects body movement and muscle coordination. Hip subluxation first appears in childhood.

Origin

A baby with cerebral palsy is born with normal hips. Muscular imbalance and bony deformity caused by CP is how hip subluxation is developed.

Significance

Hip subluxation can cause pain and balance issues. This can interfere with a person's quality of life.

Symptoms

Instability and pain are common symptoms associated with hip subluxation. Pain usually appears in young adulthood if the hip subluxation goes untreated during childhood.

Treatment

Surgery can be done to help correct hip subluxation. Amount of pain and degree of dislocation are the largest contributing factors to whether or not surgical intervention is done.

Considerations

Cases of cerebral palsy vary in severity. The degree of hip subluxation is dependent on the severity of CP the person has. The more severe cases of cerebral palsy have worse hip subluxation.
