Fish that anglers pursue for the sport of it are game fish. These species exist in rivers, lakes, ponds, streams, brooks and in the ocean as well.

    Trout

  1. Trout are just one species of game fish that have special regulations attached to them in many states in the U.S., with certain bodies of water set aside for trout fishing, extensive stocking programs to keep populations of trout steady, and specific open seasons for the fish.
  2. Largemouth Bass

  3. Largemouth bass, especially in the southern states and certain parts of the West, have an incredible following of anglers that pursue them with a passion.
  4. Trophy Fish

  5. Every state has a set of rules that establish what a trophy fish is. For example, a game fish that an angler catches that exceeds a certain weight and/or length merits trophy fish status.
  6. Fighting Fish

  7. The fight that a game fish puts up once hooked determines how highly regarded it is among anglers. Fish such as bonefish, carp, smallmouth bass and northern pike are among those with a reputation as a worthy adversary.
  8. Considerations

  9. The methods to catch game fish are as varied as the fish themselves, with anglers using an assortment of equipment, bait and tactics to hook them.
