When a product is certified, it gives a consumer the peace of mind that his purchase will adhere to specific standards in its creation and performance. Depending on the market, a company may be required to provide only certified products to its customers.

Definition

The letters CE stand for Conformité Européenne, which is French for European Conformity. Products with CE certification have been tested to conform to all directives related to product safety, public health and consumer protection.

Requirements

CE certification is required on certain products sold in the European Union as well as Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland. Turkey also requires CE certification on many products sold there.

Types of Products

CE certification is required for many consumer products, such as toys, electronics, personal safety devices and recreational crafts. Many business products, like machinery and and construction products, need to be certified as well. Chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food do not need CE certification.

Benefits

Having CE certification, a manufacturer is free to distribute his or her products throughout the European Union and other countries mentioned. The mark also provides a sense that the product is safer and reduces damage and liability suits.

Obtaining Certification

CE certification is obtained through a process called Self-Declaration. The manufacturer goes through a seven-step process to identify the directives for their product and test a sample to ensure it meets the directives.
