Why Does the Sun Irritate My Skin?

Why Does the Sun Irritate My Skin? thumbnail
UV rays from the sun are harmful.

Although the sun is critical to our existence, the paradox is that the sun can have harmful effects on our skin when we are overexposed to its UV rays.

  1. Sunlight

    • You need sunlight for your body to develop vitamin D and melanin, which are important for development of healthy bones. Deficiencies in vitamin D can lead to a condition called osteomalacia, or softening of the bones.

    UV Rays

    • Although our bodies need sunlight, the sun's ultraviolet rays (UV) are harmful to the skin. UV rays irritate the skin because they penetrate the skin and damage living cells.

    Sunburn and Cancer

    • UV rays cause sunburn. Too much exposure to UV rays is a significant factor in the development of skin cancer later in life.

    Irritation and Allergies

    • Your skin can become more sensitive to sunlight. This sensitivity causes increased irritability, heightening the discomfort that sunlight and heat naturally cause. Some skin care cosmetics and shampoos can cause this sensitivity. These products may contribute to skin "allergies."

    Protection

    • It's not practical or healthy to completely avoid the sun. Proper protection is a must, however. Use proper sun block protection, wear a hat or sun visor and keep sensitive skin covered to reduce irritation.
