MIG Welding Safety

MIG welding is a fun hobby and can be lucrative as well. It is very dangerous if not done correctly, though, so a few safety rules must be adhered to at all times.

  1. Welding Hood

    • Because MIG welding creates harmful UV rays that can damage your eyes, a welding hood must be warn when striking an arc. Two types are available: auto-darkening hoods and fixed shields which stay dark all the time.

    Weld-lead Routing

    • Always route the welding leads in such a way that you or others do not trip over them. Try to keep the welder close to the work to prevent accidents.

    Gloves

    • Welding produces a lot of heat. Wearing leather welding gloves prevents burns. They can also prevent cuts from sharp steel edges and tools.

    Welding Jacket

    • A welding jacket has leather sleeves that protect your arms from the UV rays and also from flying sparks and metal burns. They are highly recommended.

    Leather Boots

    • Leather boots, preferably steel-toed, can save your feet from shop accidents and also prevent burns from flying sparks and spatter. The aggressive tread can prevent falling on slippery floors.
