What Are the Causes of Polyps in the Stomach?

Stomach polyps are small growths on the lining of the stomach. They occur in only about 1 percent of the population, according to the Mayo Clinic, and rarely develop into cancer.

Types

Hyperplastic stomach polyps are most common. Fundic gland polyps occur in the top part of the stomach (fundus). Only about 10 percent of stomach polyps are adenomas, according to the Mayo Clinic, and these polyps are highly likely to develop into stomach cancer.

Fundic Gland Polyps

The Mayo Clinic states that the cause of fundic gland stomach polyps is not known.

Gastritis

Gastritis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach) contributes to the development of hyperplastic polyps and adenomas. The most common cause of chronic gastritis is H. pylori bacteria. Another cause of gastritis is an autoimmune response where your body's immune system attacks cells in the stomach.

GERD Medication

According to the University of Cincinnati Consumer Health Information, using medications such as Prilosec to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may cause small stomach polyps.
