What are Labelling Requirements for Clothes in Japan?
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is responsible for enforcing regulations regarding the labeling of clothes in Japan. Labeling requirements are stipulated in the Household Goods Quality Labeling Law.
-
Composition
-
According to the handbook published by the METI, the component material(s) of all textile goods must be displayed on the label. Examples of component fibers include cotton, wool, silk, hemp, rayon, nylon and polyester. Labels on coats and jackets must list the materials used in the filling, the cover fabric and the lining fabric.
Care
-
Labels on Japanese clothes must include information regarding the proper care of an item. The label should include instructions for washing, wringing and drying, and should also indicate whether bleaching, ironing or dry cleaning are appropriate.
-
Water resistance
-
Items such as raincoats that are water-repellent must include a designation on the label.
Contact
-
The Household Goods Quality Labeling Law Handbook also indicates that in Japan, all clothing must include the name and contact information of the party responsible for the label.
Enforcement
-
The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry is empowered to publicize the name of any party that does not comply with regulations.
