Medical Information on Foot Arch Pain

Foot arch pain is an inflammation and burning feeling in the arch of your foot. Also known as arch strain, the condition is characterized by swelling, tenderness, and stabbing pain which can be felt all along the bottom of the feet.

  1. Causes

    • Foot arch pain is usually caused by plantar fasciitis which is inflammation of foot ligaments. Other causes include muscle strains, stress fractures, and overuse from running or walking on hard surfaces.

    Plantar Pain

    • Foot arch pain caused by plantar fasciitis can increase or decrease when you stretch your arch. The more you use the arch, the greater the pain.

    Other Pain

    • Other foot arch pain can be more specific, such as point tenderness in one area or pain that accompanies movement.

    Pain Segments

    • Foot arch pain is segmented according to when it occurs: during activity, before activity and after activity; before, during and after activity which affects your performance; and severe pain which keeps you from using your foot.

    Treatment

    • Foot arch pain treatment includes pain medicine, rest, orthotics for your shoes, and avoiding wearing high-heeled shoes. Orthotics include arch supports, heel wedges, gel heel cups and metatarsal pads.
