Reishi mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum) are fungi that have been used in Chinese medicine for more than 4,000 years. Capsules made from dried reishi mushrooms are popular herbal remedies for liver problems, heart conditions, asthma, cancer, high blood pressure and arthritis. Science analyzing the chemical properties of reishi supports their efficacy in treating illness, including certain cancers.

    • In Chinese medicine, reishi belongs to a group of medicines called "Fu Zheng," which are the most powerful of the herbs. Reishi is called ling zhi, or "spiritual plant," because it medicinal properties are so wide-ranging it is also believed to have the power to heal the spirit.

    • Research published in the December 2003 issue of "Integrative Cancer Therapies" reported that dried reishi clearly demonstrated potent anti-cancer capabilities. Reishi suppressed the migration of highly invasive breast and prostrate cancer cells and showed high efficacy at reducing tumor spread.
