What Causes Yellow Discharge in Early Pregnancy?

Many women may become concerned about the changes in vaginal discharge during pregnancy. Vaginal discharge during pregnancy should be thin, light in color and weak in odor. Discharge that is yellow and strong smelling during pregnancy may have several causes.

Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is an infection that is caused by imbalance in vaginal organisms. Women with BV are more likely to experience vaginal irritation, yellow or green colored discharge and strong vaginal odor.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that may cause yellow discharge in pregnant women. If cases of chlamydia go untreated in pregnancy, they can cause miscarriage and may be passed to the baby during labor.

Cervical Polyps

Cervical polyps are sections of abnormal tissue growth on the cervix that can cause odor and changes in discharge color. Those found and diagnosed during pregnancy should not be removed before delivery.

Candidiasis

Candidiasis is better known as a yeast infection. Yeast infections may occur more often in some women while pregnant due to the hormones changes. Vaginal creams can be used to treat yeast infections with doctor's approval.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease that is very common worldwide. It is a parasite that may not only affect the mother's vaginal discharge but can also cause preterm birth and infection to the amniotic fluid.
