Information on RSD

RSD, also called complex regional pain syndrome, is a neurological disorder affecting the bones, joints, muscles and skin. The condition is painful, chronic and progressive, according to NeurologyChannel.com. It usually starts after surgery or injury on a limb.

  1. Types

    • There are two types of RSD. Type 1 involves no nerve injury, while Type 2 involves some nerve damage.

    Causes

    • Cerebral lesions or heart disease may cause RSD. Other causes include infection or trauma to the limb.

    Symptoms

    • RSD starts with swelling, burning and sensitivity to touch in the affected limb. It progresses to muscle stiffness and early bone loss, then may spread to other limbs.

    Complications

    • Bone, skin and muscle atrophy may occur due to reduced limb usage. Depression may be caused by RSD, as with any chronic illness, NeurologyChannel.com says.

    Treatment

    • Treatment of RSD is based around controlling pain. Painkillers or physical therapy may be prescribed to help patients deal with the disease.
