Foliculitis Treatment

Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles that causes small white-headed itchy pimples to form. Mild infections can be uncomfortable and severe infections may cause scarring and permanent hair loss.

  1. Antibiotics

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, topical or oral antibiotics may be prescribed to treat staphylococcal folliculitis and serious cases of hot tub folliculitis.

    Antifungals

    • Folliculitis infections that are caused by tinea barbae and pityrosporum fungi may be treated with anti-fungal medications.

    Antivirals

    • AIDS patients or people who suffer frequent cold sores may contract herpetic folliculitis that may be treated with antiviral drugs such as Valtrex.

    Topical Corticosteroids

    • Corticosteroids that are applied to the skin can be used to treat eosinophilic folliculitis.

    Drainage

    • Doctors may treat large boils or carbuncles with a small incision that drains the infection. Drainage can speed healing and lessen scarring.

    Symptoms

    • Superficial folliculitis infections may include pus-filled bumps and inflamed itchy skin. Deeper infections can develop larger bumps and blisters that may crust over.
