Definition of Atopic Asthma

Atopic asthma is a type of asthma that is triggered by exposure to an allergen. It is one of the most common forms of the disease, according to WrongDiagnosis.com. Atopic asthma is most common in children.

  1. Symptoms

    • Wheezing, coughing and tightness in the chest may be symptoms of atopic asthma. The condition may also cause chest pressure or chest pain.

    Causes

    • Allergens that may trigger atopic asthma include dust mites, mold, pollen or pet dander.

    Complications

    • Atopic asthma may cause difficulty with breathing. In severe cases, permanent damage or death are possible. Children who suffer from atopic asthma are absent from school more frequently than their peers.

    Diagnosis

    • The most common tests are spirometry and air peak flow. Your doctor may conduct spirometry testing to measure the narrowing of your bronchial tubes. The test checks how much air you inhale and exhale. A peak flow meter is a test that you can do at home. It measures slight changes in your airflow, as when asthma is about to flare up.

    Treatment

    • Medications such as costicosteroids, broncholidators, anti-inflammatories, or antihistamines may be prescribed to help those with the condition. Immunotherapy may reduce the allergic reaction to allergens causing atopic asthma.
