According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), cats are highly sensitive to peppermint oil as compared to other animals and other peppermint products. Peppermint oil can result in upset stomach, central nervous system dysfunction and liver damage.

Cats are physiologically different from other house pets. Dogs may be exposed to peppermint oil as a form of aromatherapy for emotional or behavioral problems. Dogs may also be drink peppermint tea for an upset stomach, according to Dr. Susan Pitcairn. Do not use either method for your cat.

The ASPCA recommends removing any household peppermint plants or other products from the reach of the cat. Substitutes for aromatherapy oils called hydrosols are available that are safe for cats and kittens. Hydrosols are the sweet-smelling waters that are emitted during the making of essential oils.
