Is a Hemangioma the Same As Mongolian Spots?
Hemangiomas and Mongolian spots are two types of marks that are either apparent at birth or appear shortly thereafter. Although they are both types of birthmarks, they are not the same as they differ in color, texture, and those afflicted.

Description

Hemangiomas can affect both the top and deeper parts of the skin. Mongolian spots are common in darker skinned races, such as Asian, East Indian and African ancestry.
Appearance

Hemangiomas are usually raised red or reddish-purple lesions on the skin. Mongolian spots are flat blue or blue-gray markings, and can sometimes be mistaken for bruises.

Tests

Both conditions can be diagnosed by a visual exam from your doctor, although additional testing may be ordered if the hemangioma is suspected of occurring due to other medical conditions.
Treatment

Depending upon the severity and placement of the hemangioma, a laser can be used to reduce or remove the lesion. In most cases of hemangioma, and all instances of Mongolian spots, no treatment is necessary and will usually fade on their own.
Complications

Some possible complications associated with hemangiomas are bleeding and secondary infections. No complications are expected from Mongolian spots.
