Take care of your heart and blood pressure with Norvasc.

Norvasc is the brand name for amlodipine besylate, a drug known as a calcium channel blocker. This type of medication is used to dilate blood vessels to increase the amount of oxygen available to the heart.

  1. Use

    • Calcium channel blocker drugs such as Norvasc are used to treat high blood pressure and angina, a condition in which clogged arteries cause chest pain.

    Precautions

    • People with allergies to amlodipine or medical conditions such as congestive heart failure or liver disease should speak to a doctor before taking Norvasc.

    Side Effects

    • Serious side effects of Norvasc may include swelling in your hands or feet, chest pain or jaundice. Less serious side effects may include headache, dizziness and strange dreams.

    Dosage

    • Norvasc comes in pill form, taken once daily. Missed doses should be taken as soon as you remember, unless your next scheduled dose is soon after. Contact medical help immediately if you take too large a dose and experience symptoms such as a tingly feeling, severe dizziness or fainting.

    Interactions

    • Tell your doctor if you take a beta-blocker drug, such as Toprol (metoprolol) or Zebeta (bisoprolol), or any other medications for your heart or blood pressure. Any drug or supplement may interact with Norvasc, including over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements, so it is critical to provide this information to your doctor.
