Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam Information
The pharmacy technician certification exam provided by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is a major avenue for future pharmacy technicians to become certified. However, this is not to be a substitute for the state licensing exam that may be required. Contact your state board of pharmacy for local requirements.

Application for Exam
-
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board accepts applications throughout the year. You can apply online at www.ptcb.org. You must schedule your test day with your local Pearson Professional Center within 90 days of application approval.
Exam Preparation
-
In the exam, 66 percent will test how well you assist patients at a pharmacy, 22 percent will test how well you maintain the medication and inventory and the remaining 12 percent will focus on your administrative skills. The PCTB website offers a practice exam that helps you prepare.
-
Time Frame
-
You have two hours to complete the 90-question exam. Ten of the questions on the exam are pretest questions that don't count toward the final score. All questions are multiple-choice.
Benefits
-
Getting certified offers credibility to your profile as a pharmacy technician. In addition, certification keeps you in legal standing should problems occur on the job.
Considerations
-
After you've become certified by the PTCB and your state, your license must be renewed two years after the original license was issued. You also should continue to take additional courses in your field and be aware of new laws in your state.
