Diflucan should be used with the supervision of a physician.

Diflucan is the brand name for the drug fluconazole. It is manufactured by Pfizer and distributed by Roerig, a division of Pfizer.

  1. Usage

    • Diflucan is an anti-fungal medication. It is used to rid patients of fungal infections and to protect patients with weakened immune systems, especially those undergoing bone marrow transplants, from future fungi.

    Ingredients

    • The active ingredient in Diflucan is fluconazole. Other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, dibasic calcium phosphate anhydrous, povidone, croscarmellose sodium, FD&C Red No. 40 aluminum lake dye, and magnesium stearate.

    Function

    • Diflucan works by changing a fungal enzyme into ergosterol, which is not a fungus. When being used as a preventive drug, Diflucan inhibits the fungal enzyme from growing in the body.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects may include liver toxicity, headache, skin rash, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. In rare cases, anaphylaxis and skin disorders have occurred. Patients with compromised immune systems are more likely to develop side effects to Diflucan.

    Interactions/Contraindications

    • Patients who are sensitive to any ingredients in Diflucan or other azoles should not take Diflucan. Contact your physician before using Diflucan.
