The precursor of the modern wheelchair was developed in the 18th century.

Wheelchairs have been around in some form for centuries. Modern materials and innovation in the 20th century led to the creation of the practical, lightweight and portable wheelchairs used today.

  1. Early Concepts

    • The Chinese used wheelbarrows to transport sick patients in the 3rd century. The earliest image of a chair with wheels appeared in an engraving done in the year 525 AD. In 1595 Spain's King Phillip II used a wheeled chair with foot rests.

    Mechanization

    • In 1655 Stephen Farfler invented the first mechanized wheelchair. It resembled a tricycle and moved by manually cranking the front wheel.

    Modern Design

    • According to Wheelchair.net, the first true wheelchairs appeared in the 18th century. They were adjustable and featured a more comfortable seat for the patient.

    Motors

    • The first motorized wheelchairs were invented in London in 1916.

    Folding Wheelchairs

    • With the popularity of the automobile, consumers wanted wheelchairs that could be easily transported by car. In 1933 Herbert Everest and HC Jennings invented the first folding wheelchair.

    Wheelchairs Today

    • Research in the 20th century focused on making lightweight wheelchairs to reduce the effort needed to operate them. Chrome alloy, titanium and carbon fibers are common wheelchair materials today.
