Coal Stove Vs. Wood Stove
Stoves have been keeping families warm since the colonial times, and are still used in homes today. They can be an excellent source of heat if chosen properly. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Types
-
Although there are many types of stoves available, two commonly used types are the traditional wood-burning stove and the more modern coal-fueled stove.
Misconceptions
-
Although coal has been given a bad reputation when it comes to the environment, the type of coal used for stoves, anthracite, is actually quite clean, as it is very high in carbon.
-
Cost
-
Both stoves are similarly priced, as coal stoves start around $1,300 while wood-fueled stoves begin at about $1,500. Installation may cost up to an extra $500 for each type.
Benefits
-
Wood stoves are considered more aesthetically pleasing than a furnace with their elegant, ancient look. Coal-burning stoves can generate more heat, and can last up to 18 hours without being relit.
Drawbacks
-
Anthracite is not always available in some areas, and is more expensive the farther you are from the source, making a coal-fueled stove impractical at times. Wood-burning stoves need to be maintained constantly to keep the fire going.
