Each college has its own set of nursing prerequisite courses.

Nursing is a rewarding career, but becoming a nurse can be difficult. There are certain prerequisite courses you must take before embarking on a nursing career. Since admission to nursing school is becoming competitive, you will also need to score the best grades possible.

  1. Chemistry

    • Each college, university or nursing school has its own set of nursing prerequisite courses. Most programs, however, will ask for one or two courses in chemistry.

    Statistics

    • The ability to chart statistics is extremely important in nursing, so most programs demand at least one course in the subject as a prerequisite.

    Anatomy & Physiology

    • Usually more than one course in human anatomy and physiology is required as a prerequisite for nursing.

    Microbiology

    • Four credits in microbiology are standard as a nursing prerequisite.

    Psychology and Sociology

    • Many nursing programs ask for credits in either psychology or sociology or both. Some programs may also ask for classes in child development or family studies.
