Bird Food for Hawks

Bird Food for Hawks

Hawks are carnivorous birds; they only eat other animals. In general, hawks will eat any live animal that they can catch and eat--they have a varied diet. They tend to adapt to eating what is in abundance in the areas they live.

  1. Mammals

    • Mammals such as rats, mice, squirrels, and rabbits are probably the most common hawk food. Red-tailed hawks will seek out any mammal they can catch. Rough-legged hawks prefer rodents over any other mammal.

    Birds

    • Catching birds for a meal is hard work and takes great skill. Aplomado falcons work in pairs to flush out and then catch birds in flight. Cooper's hawks and sharp shinned hawks are also known for their birding skills.

    Insects

    • Smaller hawks will feast on insects caught in flight or on the ground. Swainson's hawks are known for adding insects to their diet.

    Reptiles

    • Many hawks have been seen eating snakes, lizards and even turtles. This includes Red-tailed and Red-shouldered hawks.

    Carrion

    • Carrion or already dead animals are not usually eaten by hawks. They may make an exception if live food is scarce.
