Crappie are a popular freshwater game fish. Members of the sunfish family. they are widely known for being easy to catch and are considered one of the best-tasting freshwater fish.

  1. Time Frame

    • Crappie are found in various locations, depending upon the time of year. Bait types and fishing techniques are adjusted accordingly.

    Size

    • Small minnows are considered the best live bait for crappie. These should measure between 1 and 1 1/2 inches in length. Put the minnows on a small hook.

    Types

    • Other effective live baits include worms, insects and crayfish. When ice fishing, anglers use meal worms, wax worms and insect larvae, such as mousies (maggots) and silver wigglers. Some baits work better during certain seasons than others.

    Artificial Bait

    • At times, angers prefer to use artificial lures. When used properly, these imitate the actions of live bait. The lead-head jig is one of the most effective lures for catching crappie.

    Considerations

    • Crappie spawn in the spring. This is when they are most aggressive and it's also the most opportune time to use attention-getting bait, such as minnows, crayfish or lures.
