Is Chlorhexidine Gluconate Safe for Dogs?

Chlorhexidine gluconate is used as a disinfectant and cleanser. In veterinary applications, it can be used as a topical treatment for infections. While it is considered safe for use on dogs, it should not be used except under the guidance of a veterinarian.

  1. Uses

    • Chlorhexidine gluconate is used as a treatment for dental infections in animals. It can be used as a dental rinse or as an injection. As a topical treatment, it is effective for ear infections. When used as a shampoo, it is effective in treating skin conditions. A 4 percent solution of chlorhexidine gluconate is also used as an antiseptic preparation for surgery.

    Common Dosages

    • For treatment of the ears, flushing out the ear canal twice a day is recommended. Cleansing affected skin areas twice a day is also recommended. An oral solution is applied once a day for the treatment of gum infections. Used as a shampoo and conditioner, it is recommended that you use it on your dog once or twice a week, depending on the advice of your veterinarian.

    Forms

    • Solutions of 0.1 percent strength are available for use as oral rinses. For ear treatments, a 1 percent solution is available. Chlorhexidine gluconate solutions of 2 percent are used for shampoos and must be diluted before use.

    Side Effects

    • Chlorhexidine gluconate is considered safe and has few or no side effects when used properly. Skin irritations, rash and allergic reactions are the most common side effects. These subside when treatment is discontinued.

    Precautions

    • Chlorhexidine gluconate should not be used without proper dosing advice from a veterinarian. Your veterinarian will advise you on the correct dosage, which depends on the severity of your dog's condition.
