What Causes Odor in a Wound?

Odor emanating from a wound is caused by tissue death and the decay of that tissue. Decay of tissue causes compounds such as cadaverine, putrecine, and sulphorous compounds to be released.

Significance

Sweet, foul, fecal, musty, or strong odor may point to an infection. Sweet odors in combination with a thin, foamy, green drainage may indicate a Pseudomonas infection.

Treatment

Cleansing the wound with an anti-microbial wound cleanser will kill odor-causing bacteria and reduce odor. Dressing and debriding the wound will remove dead tissue and keep the wound protected. Your doctor will then monitor the condition of the wound and re-evaluate until the wound is completely healed.

Social Handicap

Odoriferous or putrid wounds carry a social stigma along with health hazards and vulnerability to infections. Putrid wounds can inhibit sexual, social and work life and lead to shame and depression in the patient.
