How Can Botox Help Cystitis?

Botulinum toxin, known better as botox, is commonly used as a cosmetic treatment for preventing wrinkles. In addition to treating wrinkles, botox is useful as treatment for various disorders. One of these disorders is cystitis.

  1. Cystitis

    • Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder caused by infection. Pelvic floor muscle tenderness and bladder problems are commonly associated with cystitis.

    Botox Treatment

    • Botox is a muscle relaxer. The belief is by using botox treatment for cystitis, patients that pelvic tenderness and bladder problems will improve.

    Studies

    • As of 2009, the University of Washington was sponsoring a study on the effects of botox treatment on cystitis. The study was started in September 2005. Hann-Chrong Kuo conducted a small study of his own regarding botox treatment and cystitis.

    Results

    • In his study Hann-Chrong Kuo determined botox treatment has slight improvements for patients with cystitis. The results gathered as of 2009 from the University of Washington study tend to support Hann-Chrong Kuo's results.

    Other Treatment

    • Antibiotics are another method of treatment for cystitis. Antibiotics work to rid the body of the infection that caused the cystitis.
