What Is a GED File?

The GED, or GEDCOM, file types are used by a number of programs for the entry, viewing and storage of genealogical data. GEDCOM is a standard file type for creating family trees with familial relationships.

    • GED and GEDCOM file types stand for Genealogical Data Communication. These files store data in standard ANSI format, and their raw data can be read in any text editor.

    Programs

    • There are a number of programs that allow users to create, analyze or view files with the .ged extension, including GenealogyJ, GEDitCOM for Macintosh and WinGed.

    • Aside from being able to represent a basic family tree, GED files allow users to store information about events in the lives of people and families and information on sources of data.
