Pregnancy & Hair Loss

Hair loss during and after pregnancy can be frustrating.

Pregnancy changes your body in so many ways. These changes include your hair. You may begin to experience hair loss during and after pregnancy.

  1. Resting Phase

    • When pregnant, your hair may go into a "resting phase," which will limit the amount of hairs you lose, according to americanpregnancy.org. This is completely normal, and you may notice your hair fuller and healthier looking.

    Vitamins and Minerals

    • If you experience hair loss during pregnancy, there may be a bigger issue at hand. According to americanpregnancy.org, if you notice hair loss while pregnant, you may be experiencing a mineral or vitamin deficiency. To correct this, see your doctor to get a vitamin or mineral supplement.

    Hormones

    • Around three months after delivery, you may notice your hair falling out in clumps. The hormones that were raised during pregnancy have since plummeted. When this happens, all the hair that was in the resting phase before may fall out all at once.

    Shampoo and Comb

    • To help with the hair loss, use a shampoo and conditioner that contains biotin and silica. These aid scalp health to encourage hair development and avoid hair loss. You can also comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb, which will keep the loose hairs from being all over you.

    Other Techniques

    • Avoid using hot rollers, hair dryers or curlers, and do not tug on your hair. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables because these have flavonoids---antioxidants that can guard hair follicles and promote hair development.

    Concern

    • If you are concerned, get your doctor to do a hormone check.
