Hormones & Acne in Menopause

Even as an adult one cannot always escape acne. There are many factors that contribute to the embarrassing skin disease, including menopause.

  1. Hormones

    • No matter what age an individual is, when hormones change acne appears. During menopause, hormones are changing, which causes a sudden outbreak.

    Perimenopause

    • When the levels of estrogen in a woman's body starts to drop it is known as perimenopause. This is the beginning stage of menopause, when acne flares up the most.

    Hormone Therapy

    • One way to treat symptoms of menopause such as acne is with hormone therapy. This type of medication increases the amount of estrogen in the body, resulting in less acne.

    Over the Counter

    • There are a number of products that can be purchased at a drugstore to help treat acne. These topical creams and face washes should include benzoyl peroxide as an active ingredient to fight acne.

    Medication

    • If an individual is not interested in hormone therapy, a dermatologist can prescribe a medication that can cure or control acne breakouts, either in the form of a cream or pill.
