Rabbits are soft and cute.

Rabbits are cute and soft creatures that we want to cuddle. Keeping rabbits cute and cuddly can sometimes be a challenge if the rabbit is suffering from loose stools.

  1. Diet

    • An unhealthy diet is often the cause of loose stools. Rabbits should be fed a balanced diet of hay, fresh vegetables and pellets, and it is important that they not be overfed.

    Changes in Diet

    • Hay and green leafy foods are an essential part of a rabbit's diet.

Adding green vegetables when a rabbit has not had them before can sometimes cause loose stools. Introducing the rabbit to hay first will help prepare his intestinal tract to accept green leafy foods.

    Medicines

    • Rabbits clean themselves almost continuously, swallowing a tremendous amount of hair. Some medications can prevent hairball problems but used in excess can cause loose stools.

    Parasites

    • Coccidia, a parasite that gets into a rabbit's small intestine, can cause diarrhea.

    Foods and Medicines to Avoid

    • Feeding sweet or salty snacks to a rabbit is not recommended. Penicillin should be avoided as it kills the good bacteria in the intestines. Diarrhea is a sign that the rabbit is not tolerating the antibiotic, and a different one should be tried.
