The Grapefruit

The grapefruit diet is based on the magical ingredient, naringenin, which is found in grapefruits. This compound gives this fruit its bitter taste. There are many benefits to this diet, but it is not advisable to stay on it for a prolonged period.

A study on the effect of grapefruit on the diet was conducted in 2006 by the Florida Department of Citrus. By adding one half of a grapefruit to every meal (or four ounces of grapefruit juice), study participants lost more than three pounds in 12 weeks. Some participants lost 10 pounds during this time frame.
