At What Degree Does a Scoliosis Patient Need Surgery?

Scoliosis is a side to side curvature of the spine that affects nearly 12 million people world wide. Females ages of 10-15 have the highest incidence of the condition.

  1. Definition

    • A normal spine curves front to back. In individuals with scoliosis, the side to side curvature coupled with the front to back curvature, rotates the spine into a cork screw like position.

    Curvature

    • Scoliosis curves are measured in degrees and can range from small curves of less than 10 degrees to extreme curves of over 100 degrees. Curves can look C or even S shaped.

    Mild Scoliosis

    • Scoliosis is considered mild when curves are between 10 and 20 degrees. Most doctors will simply monitor the scoliosis when curvatures are this range.

    Moderate Scoliosis

    • Bracing is usually required when curves become more moderate, typically in the 25 to 40 degree range. Patients are fitted with a body brace designed to treat their particular curvature.

    Severe Scoliosis

    • Curvatures reaching 40 degrees or more are often treated with surgery. A spinal fusion is performed to correct the curvature using metal rods and plates.
