Hook and loop pads are commonly known by the brand name Velcro; however, Velcro is the company name, not the name of the product.

  1. Invention

    • In the 1940s, the Swiss inventor George de Mestral noticed how cockleburs hooked onto his pants and his dog's fur coat. Mestral attempted to mimic nature by creating a hook and loop system, but didn't perfect his idea until 1953 when working with nylon thread.

    How it Works

    • There are two sides to hook and loop pads---the hook side is characteristically prickly, whereas the loop side feels fuzzy. The fastener works when the loops intertwine with the hooks and close.

    The Velcro Company

    • Velcro was founded in Europe and came to the U.S. in 1958. Velcro is the leader in the hook and loop industry and holds more than 160 active patents.

    Types

    • Although most commonly known for fasteners on clothing and shoes, Velcro sells products for use in crafts, industry and gardening. Adhesive-backed hook and look pads are also available for use around the home. Hook and loop pads are available in a variety of shapes and colors.

    Interesting Facts

    • Hook and loop pads are a part of pop culture. They have been a part of major fashion trends, have flown to the moon with Neil Armstrong, and have been frequently used in stunts on various television shows.
