What Is an Open Wound?

Wounds are classified in two general types: open and closed. An open wound means the skin is broken and tissue is exposed. In a closed wound, the skin remains closed, such as in a bruise or hematoma. Open wounds are the most subject to infection from pathogens all around us and should be cared for well.

  1. Incision

    • An incision wound is made with a sharp instrument, such as a scalpel. The edges of the wound are cut cleanly and are smooth. A surgical incision is an example of an incision wound.

    Puncture

    • A puncture wound is made by a sharp, pointed object and goes deep into the tissue. The wound's edges can be smooth or rough, depending on how the puncture was made. An animal bite is a puncture wound

    Laceration

    • A laceration is a deep, ragged, tear wound. Edges are rough and jagged, and depth of the wound is not uniform. Cutting your hand on broken glass creates a laceration.

    Abrasion

    • An abrasion is a scrape or scratch in which only the top layer of skin is removed. "Road rash" is a type of abrasion.

    Open Wound Care

    • Always clean the injured site. Use 70 percent isoprophyl alcohol. Flush the injured area with clean water to remove bacteria. Cover it with a topical antibiotic ointment and a bandage. If redness, pain and swelling occur, and particularly if there is fever, see a medical professional because these are signs of infection.
