What Is Ortho Silicate Glass?

Orthosilicate glass, or orthosilicate glass-ceramic, is a transparent silica-based material that contains minute silica crystals in a glassy matrix. It is used in the production of optical fibers.

Composition

Orthosilicate glass differs from common glass in composition; a high proportion of lithium or aluminum may replace silica in the mix. Up to 1 percent chromium may also be included to create an optically active material.

Production Process

Orthosilicate glass-ceramic is created by casting the glass matrix to desired form, then holding it at a temperature that allows crystallization to begin. Once the crystallization has reached a sufficient level, the glass is cooled completely.

Properties

The crystals trapped within the matrix give the glass superior light-transmitting capacity compared to untreated glass. Some forms also emit light in addition to transmitting it.

Optical Fiber Applications

Orthosilicate glass' most common use is in the production of optical fiber relays that boost the carried signal to prevent data loss.

Nanocircuits

The capacity of orthosilicate glass to create metallic structures of submicroscopic dimensions by controlled crystallization also makes it a suitable substrate for producing nanocircuitry.
