Safety and Space Heaters
Electric space heaters are responsible for many injuries, deaths, and fires every year because of misuse. The dangers of space heaters can be greatly minimized by having a basic understanding of the operation of the heater. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Water
-
Never use an electric space heater near water or in wet locations such as bathtubs and sinks, or touch the heater if wet. Heaters falling into water could cause serious injury, death, and structure fires.
Guards
-
Making sure that all factory-installed guards are properly in place and functional will reduce the risk of injury and fire. Never remove guards or attempt to alter them, and do not use a heater without guards.
-
Cords
-
Extension cords should not be used with electric space heaters, if possible. If necessary, a 14-gauge or larger cord is recommended and should never be placed under rugs, furniture, or other items.
Combustion
-
Electric space heaters generate enough heat to ignite combustible materials in the vicinity of the heater. Never place a space heater near drapes, furniture, papers, bedding, or other flammable materials.
Use
-
Electric space heaters should never be used while unattended or sleeping to reduce the risk of fire. These heaters are intended as temporary supplement heating only in areas that are attended.
