Dental implants

Denture implants are surgically placed metal posts or frames. They are affixed to the bone under the gums. The implants provide support for artificial teeth. You must have healthy gums and bones in order to be a candidate for dental implants.

  1. Function

    • Dental implants fuse to your jawbone and provide stable support for artificial teeth. Dentures and bridges will not slip in your mouth when they are mounted to the implants.

    Types

    • According to the American Dental Association, two types of implants are safe. Endosteal implants are posts that are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone and subperiosteal implants have a metal frame that is fitted onto the jawbone below the gum tissue.

    Time Frame

    • Dental implants last 10 to 20 years. The time the implants will last will depend on the location and the ongoing oral hygiene care and dental visits.

    Benefits

    • The benefits of dental implants include the natural feel and the fact that they will not slip or shift in your mouth when you eat or talk.

    Considerations

    • Denture implants consist of two separate surgeries. The first implants the posts or frame into the gum. The second attaches the collars to the head of the implants. The process takes approximately six months.

    Cost

    • According to the Dental Resources, the cost of dental implants can range from $1,250 to $3,000 per tooth, as of 2009. The cost will be be dependent on the amount of surgery needed.
