Allergic Reactions to Lawn Fertilizer in Dogs

Lawn fertilizers are one of many substances that can cause allergic reactions in dogs. Allergic reactions happen when dogs inhale, ingest or come into contact with something their immune systems identify as a threat. Allergy symptoms are the body's attempt to eliminate the threat.

Symptoms

Dogs may scratch themselves or lick and bite their feet after coming in contact with lawn fertilizer. Other allergy symptoms may include reddened skin, hives and hair loss.

Diagnosis

Your veterinarian will likely ask you a series of questions to determine if lawn fertilizer might be causing your dog's allergy. If your dog's symptoms are severe or ongoing, blood work or skin tests may be ordered.

Treatment

Your vet may prescribe steroids or antibiotics if your dog has signs of skin inflammation or infection. You vet may also give allergy shots to your dog.

Significance

Dog allergies are becoming more common, according to CNN. About 10 percent of dogs will develop an allergy. Pugs, Boston terriers, bulldogs, setters, terriers and retrievers appear to be most likely to develop allergies, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

Warning

Some lawn fertilizers contain pesticides or other harsh chemicals that may be harmful to your dog. Use an organic lawn fertilizer made from natural ingredients to reduce health risks.
