What Is Difference Between CPAP & BiPAP?

A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine and a bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machine are both used to treat sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. They both deliver air but in different ways to help the patient breath.

Sleep disorders

Sleep apnea occurs when a person pauses while breathing or has shallow breathing when he sleeps and does not get enough air to the lungs. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway becomes blocked and air tries to squeeze through, causing loud snoring.

CPAP

CPAP machines give air pressure to the patient that is continuous and remains at the same level when the patient breaths in and out.

BiPAP

BiPAP machines give air pressure to a patient at one strength when she exhales and at a different strength when she inhales to open the airways.

Uses

CPAP machines are the best treatment for sleep apnea problems. BiPAP machines are used when a patient cannot tolerate the CPAP or the CPAP pressure needed is very high. BiPAP machines are also used by people with lung disease and higher carbon dioxide levels.

Cost difference

These machines are expensive. CPAP machines are cheaper and range between $700 to $1,500, whereas BiPAP machines range from $1,200 to $6,000.
