Different Kinds of Food Mold

How often have you opened a long-forgotten container of food, only to discover a layer of fuzzy green mold over the top? Food mold can be found in a variety of environments and on any type of food.

Good Food Molds

Some foods, especially cheeses, are made with mold or have edible mold on them. Many of the blue cheeses, such as Roquefort or Gorgonzola, are made with mold.

Toxic Food Mold

Mycotoxins are dangerous mold byproducts. Certain types of foods-such as apples, celery, certain grains and nut products-have a tendency to produce these types of dangerous molds.

Common Mold Sources

Certain foods are more prone to mold growth than others. Dairy and bread products are common sources for mold.

Most Common Types of Mold

The most common types of mold are green or gray in color and can grow on most food items. The four most common molds are: Asperillus, Penicillium, Rhizopus and Monascus.

Food Mold Allergies

Mold can cause a number of allergic reactions. If you come in contact with food mold, do not inhale or sniff it. Sneezing, wheezing, rash and itchy eyes all can be signs of an allergic reaction to food mold.
