Can Parasites Cause Digestive Problems?

Parasites are living organisms that live in animals and humans, often causing health problems and immunity issues, sometimes going unnoticed for months or even years.

  1. Most Common Parasites

    • Examples of parasites that live in the digestive tracts of humans and animals are Giardia and Cryptosporidium, which are passed through the feces. Amoebae are microorganisms that affect the smaller intestine and colon.

    What Parasites Do

    • Parasites cause illness ranging from mild to severe, so symptoms should not be taken lightly. Amoebae release an enzyme that causes ulcers and abscesses which can enter the bloodstream and reach other organs, including the brain or liver. Cryptosporidium causes diarrhea and severe abdominal pain. Giardia can prevent the absorption of nutrients, resulting in malnourishment and a host of other stomach upsets.

    Potential Dangers

    • Parasites can also be mistaken for cancerous tumors or even travel into the brain, heart or lungs. They can lump together and damage vital organs and block important pathways.

    What To Watch Out For

    • Parasites live in contaminated food and water, therefore it is best to refrain from drinking or swallowing water from rivers, lakes, ponds, streams or pools.

    Treatment

    • If you suspect a parasitic infection or are experiencing symptoms, it is important to speak to a doctor. If diagnosed, your doctor will most likely treat you with antibiotics.
