The sharing of songs and other media files has become extremely popular in the Internet age, leading to a variety of different audio file formats and media player software programs to manage them. One of those software programs was Morpheus, until the company's demise in 2008.

    Basics

  1. Morpheus was designed to be used with the Windows operating system, downloadable for free from their main website as well as other secondary sites.
  2. Peer-to-peer

  3. Morpheus is considered a peer-to-peer (P2P) program, which means the majority of the content is uploaded by users and downloaded by other users, instead of coming from one central source.
  4. Usage

  5. Once Morpheus is installed, the user enters a title or artist and the program searches not only Morpheus' network, but also those of other P2P networks, including BitTorrent, Gnutella and Kazaa. Downloading begins if and when the desired files are found.
  6. File Types

  7. Morpheus works with a variety of different audio and video file formats, including the widely used MP3, WAV, AVI, and MP4, as well as other photo and document file formats.
  8. Bankruptcy

  9. StreamCast, the company that developed Morpheus, filed for bankruptcy in 2008, meaning the end of any new versions of Morpheus and the company's website, though the most recent version (5.5.1) is still available from other sites.
