Sida's policies are classed into five different categories: peace and security; economic opportunities; knowledge, health and social development; democracy, human rights, and gender equality; and environmentally sustainable development.

There are two secretariats in Sida: The Secretariat for Development and Coherence and The Secretariat for Research Co-operation.
